Beginners 6 Week Learn To Knit Course – Evenings


Complete beginners knitting course – takes you from how to hold the yarn & knitting needles to being able to knit basic shapes, in a range of cool knit stitches (knit & purl, moss stitch, basket-weave, rib and cable) and then sewing them together. Then you will learn how to make pom-poms and fringes for that finishing touch.

You will also  learn key terminology to enable you to read and understand knitting patterns, as well as learn where to get great (free & paid) knitting patterns, where to source yarn and join follow on knitting courses we run.

Our courses run for 6 consecutive weeks generally but do take account of some of the holidays such as Easter and Bank Holidays.

What You Will Learn:

This is a progressive skills course of 6 workshops covering key knitting techniques which will give you a good grounding for future projects.

The workshops are kept short so that you learn during the workshop and start applying that knowledge during the evening – you will then need to practice what you have learned each week to build up your skills.

We will be using some gorgeous soft & chunky wool and large knitting needles to start with so you can learn the key knitting stitches easily and you will get results in super quick time. You will then progress to smaller needles over the 6 weeks and work with different yarn types including wool, alpaca and cotton.

wk 1: Basic Techniques & Getting Started
Yarn weights & types
– Choosing colours
– Main brands and yarn types (and where to buy them online and locally)
– Knitting needles sizes – how they relate to yarn type & weight
– What knitting kit you need (and what you don’t!)
– Holding the yarn and the needle (English style)
– How to cast on and cast off

wk 2: Mastering Key Stitch Types
– Basic knit and purl stitches
– Stocking stitch & ribbing
– Adding a new yarn
– Winding up a long yarn tail
– Correcting mistakes during knitting

wk 3: How to Follow Knitting Patterns
– Knitting pattern abbreviations
– Knitting terminology and symbols on patterns
– Measuring tension
– Increasing & decreasing stitches

wk 4: More Stitch Types & Knitting With Colour
– Simple twists- Cable stitch
– Rib stitch
– Moss stitch
– Basketweave
– Using, adding and changing colours

wk 5: Embellishments & Finishing
– Embroidery on knitting
– Fringes and tassels
– Floral embellishments
– Sewing together knitted pieces

wk 6: Review and Repeat Key Techniques
– Repeat key learnings from course
– Next steps to continue your knitting skills & project ideas
– Advice on finishing your course projects

What To Bring With You:

At the first workshop you will be given some chunky soft wool and some large knitting needles plus a knitting workbook to follow during the course.
